Inclined plane (or wedge) is a triangle-shaped tool, which is used to lift or separate two objects (as an axe). Natural organisms broadly use inclined planes, in particular to optimize their locomotion using the surrounding medium. Example

1. Fishes and aquatic mammals

Fishes and aquatic mammals have developed their entire body morphology on inclined planes and streamlines to avoid turbulence, which would cause great losses in kinetic energy. Streamlined bodies have a bluff shape in the front and a gradual taper at the back to prevent the flow to separate. As a result, the body is pushed forwards by the closing fluid behind it (Biewener 2007; Hertel 1963). Example

2. Hydrofoil swimming
